Spinal Cord Injury
According to the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD) and the Canadian Paraplegic Association, there are an estimated 40,000 Canadians living with spinal cord injuries. Approximately 900 people experience these injuries each year and 80% of these injuries happen to individuals under age 30. Spinal cord injuries can lead to devastating paralysis in a person’s extremities and/or trunk. Financial care requirements, over a disabled lifetime, can range from $1.25 million for a low thoracic paraplegic to $5 million for a high cervical quadriplegic (requiring continuous ventilator support and 24/7 care). What are some of the causes of spinal cord injury?- Car collisions: 35%
- Falls: 16.5%
- Medical: 10.8%
- Sports: 6.7%
- Other motor vehicle collisions: 6.2%
- Diving: 5.3%
- Industrial: 5.3%
- Other: 14.2%
Spinal cord injuries are even more devastating when they are caused due to the negligence of an individual, medical professional or medical facility. If you or a loved one has suffered a spinal cord injury due to negligence, our spinal cord injury lawyers may be able to help you collect compensation for pain and suffering, loss of wages, medical expenses and costs of future treatment. Alcohol and Car Accidents
In 2005, the Canadian Institute for Health Information released a report that Canadian youth were more likely than adults to be involved in an alcohol-related car accident. The following sobering statistics were despite intensive public education campaigns on the dangers of drunk driving: - More than 30% of alcohol-related motor vehicle collisions in Canada in 2002-03 involved people under the age of 25.
- Of all deaths involving Canadian drivers who were drunk, 43% were under the age of 25.
- Between 2000-01 and 2002-03, 144 youths who had driven while impaired died in hospital after sustaining major injuries in a crash.
- The number of drunk-driving youths seriously injured in accidents rose from 237 in 2001-01 to 267 in 2001-02, but dipped to 250 in 2002-03.
- Most of the crashes involving youths occurred on the weekends (77%) and at night (72%).
- The peak period for the accidents is in June, when youths are just finishing their school year and celebrating at graduations, proms and parties.
The report also revealed that motor vehicle collisions involving drivers of all age groups were responsible for more than half (783) of the alcohol-related hospitalizations in Canada in 2002-03. This was a 9% increase over three years. Regardless of the driver's age, alcohol-related car accidents can take the lives and livelihood of the impaired drivers and innocent victims as well. At Findlay Law, we can help you if you've been injured or if a loved one has been killed in an auto accident. Disability Claims
Injuries that lead to disabilities can happen anywhere, at any time. Disability insurance can help alleviate some of the hardships you experience when a severe injury has taken away some of your normal functions. Unfortunately, not all insurance providers make it easy to collect the compensation you deserve. Whether this is personal disability insurance you have purchased on your own or insurance provided by an employer, denied or underpaid disability claims can make a difficult situation even more devastating. What types of injuries can result in disabilities?- Spinal cord injuries
- Broken or severed limbs
- Vision injuries
- Hearing / ear injuries
- Brain / head injuries
Why could you be denied disability payment? - There is insufficient medical proof of your disability
- The impairment is not considered severe or is not expected to last more than one year
- The impairment results from alcohol or drug addiction
- You are able to perform your usual type of work or another type of work
- You fail to take prescribed medicine as directed
- You return to work while application is pending
- You are caught doing an activity you claim you could not do
If you are struggling to get compensation for a disability claim, our experienced disability lawyers can help. Call us immediately after the insurance company denies your claim so we can get to work on your case. Please contact our office today for a free case evaluation.

Wrongful death eligibility following a car accident
There are many different reasons why people become victims of auto accidents. While the vast majority of accidents result in minor injuries or only damage to vehicles, an estimated 2,800 people are actually killed on Canadian roads every year. Wrongful death suits can be claimed by a surviving husband or wife, children, parents, brothers or sisters when negligence, reckless or intentional misconduct has cased the death of a family member.
