Cell Phone Use and Car Accidents
Millions of Canadians rely on cell phones to communicate. This reliance on cell phone use has dramatically increased the number of people who use them while driving. Drivers using cell phones to talk and text while driving represent a hazard to us all and also to themselves. News accounts remind us almost on a daily basis of the dangers of driving and cell phone use.
Studies indicate that almost 80% of all drivers use their cell phones to talk or text at some point while driving. Amazingly, drivers using cell phones exhibit the same behaviors as drunk drivers. The cell phone users reaction time is slower, they are less quick to apply brakes and slower to regain speed after braking. They also weave instead of staying in the middle of their lane. Cell phone using drivers are more prone to be involved in rear end collisions and do not use their turn signals either.
Cell phone use while driving causes at least 12,000 injuries and over 2600 deaths annually. There are more cell phone using drivers on the road than drunk drivers at any given time.
