Cranial Nerve and Traumatic Brain Injury
The cranial nerves are nerves that run from the base of the brain into different parts of the head. They are often involved in traumatic injury to the brain itself. Injury to the cranial nerves can involve the alteration or destruction of our senses. A traumatic brain injury is caused by a sudden, violent blow to the head which causes bruising, tearing and bleeding.
A traumatic brain injury can result from an automobile accident, a fall, a job-related injury or an assault. The severity of the injury depends on the part of the brain injured. The effects of a traumatic brain injury are usually physically, psychologically and financially devastating.
A mild traumatic brain injury, also known as a concussion, can cause a headache and some temporary confusion, whereas a severe traumatic brain injury can cause paralysis or death.
A mild traumatic brain injury usually responds to bed rest and over the counter pain medication for headache. However, moderate to severe traumatic brain injury usually requires a long period of hospitalization, surgery, extended rehabilitation and occupational therapy.
