The Role of Health Canada in Recalls
Health Canada develops and enforces regulations under the Government of Canada legislation to protect the public health and safety. Health Canada provides relevant information on issues that concern the health of Canadians, such as public advisories and warnings, information updates and foreign product alerts.
Health Canada is actively engaged in making certain Canadians have access to safe and effective drugs and health related products as well as attempting to reduce the incidence of disease and conditions adversely affecting the public.
Alerts may include adverse reactions related to the use of pharmaceuticals, blood products, herbal products and vaccines. Problems related to the use of cosmetics, household products, child-related products, medical devices or pesticides and food products are also included.
Recalls are initiated by an importer or manufacturer that has become aware that a certain product has or may have a public safety concern. Health Canada works together with companies to ensure the removal of dangerous products from the marketplace quickly and efficiently.
