Hydroplane and Loss of Control Accidents Due To Rain/Ice
Adverse weather conditions play an important part in any motor vehicle accident. One of the most common types of accident in bad weather is the hydroplane and loss of control accident due to rain or ice. Many factors contribute to hydroplaning on slick roads including:
- The amount of water or ice on the road
- Visibility
- Speed
- Inadequate or defective tires
Cars rely on friction between the tires and the road to perform basic functions like turning, braking, and acceleration. Tires are designed to dissipate water on wet roads to ensure that the tire remains in contact with the road. If there is more water on the road than the tires can dissipate effectively, the car may rise off the road and ride on the sheet of water instead, which is hydroplaning.
Once a car starts hydroplaning, there are only a few things you can do to prevent a serious accident:
- Slow down - Allow the tires to re-grip the surface of the road, do not slam on the brakes however, as this only makes matters worse.
- Avoid overcorrecting - Once you find yourself hydroplaning, do not jerk the wheel. If you are sliding, turn into the direction of the slide.
