Paralysis Injuries Questions

How is paralysis defined?
Paralysis is the loss of motor function or voluntary movement of one or more muscle groups. Paralysis that affects only one muscle or limb is partial paralysis—also called palsy—whereas paralysis of all muscles is total paralysis.

What are the different types of paralysis?
The various types are classified according to region. Monoplegia affects one limb, diplegia affects the same body region on both sides—both arms, both legs, etc. Hemiplegia affects one side of the body. Paraplegia affects both legs, lower torso, and occasionally the chest. Quadriplegia, also called tetraplegia, affects all four limbs and the torso.

What are the causes of paralysis?
Nerve damage in the brain or spinal cord causes certain parts of your body to become unresponsive to messages sent from your brain. The most common causes are trauma (accidents, falls, violence). But you can also become paralyzed from a stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, metabolic disorders, ruptured or slipped discs, or various spinal diseases.

Does paralysis impact your skin?
Paralysis from a spinal cord injury reduces or eliminates you skin’s sensations below the affected area. Since you are unable to feel, you might lie for long period of time on a certain part of your body. This pressure restricts blood flow in your skin and can result in sores.

What do "complete" and "incomplete" injuries mean?
Complete injuries mean the spinal cord isn’t necessarily severed, though there is a loss of sensation and function below the injured area. Incomplete injuries result in partial loss. Both complete and incomplete injuries can happen in paraplegia and quadriplegia.

What types of spinal cord injuries lead to paralysis?
There are three main types of spinal cord injuries that can result in paralysis. This includes contusion, compression, and direct injury. Contusions arise from a direct hit to the spinal column, creating swelling and pressure that leads to nerve damage. Compression is when the spinal cord is aggressively compacted, also causing swelling and pressure that causes nerve and spinal column damage. Direct injury is when the spinal cord is cut by bone or another force, thus damaging the nerves.

How much is my claim worth?
Ontario courts base the amount of compensation awarded for a paralysis injury on losses the injured party endures. If you or your family suffers a significant loss, you will typically be awarded higher compensation. The court also takes into account future economic losses, including the inability to work or the need for future treatment and care.
